Legacy Students

Build your Hurricane heritage: Make a University of Miami education part of your family tradition

The University of Miami Legacy Program recognizes the commitment of alumni who support and encourage their children or grandchildren to consider the University for college. The University of Miami Division of Development and Alumni Relations works closely with campus partners to ensure a successful transition to college life for legacy families.

Prospective Students

In a little more than 90 years, the University of Miami has risen to become one of the great academic research institutions in the country. In the last year alone, we received more than 40,000 applications for a freshman class of approximately 2,400 first-year students. Our success is due in great part to our more than 193,228 alumni whose accomplishments speak volumes about the value of a University of Miami degree.

  • Legacy applicants are encouraged to submit their information to ensure their legacy relationship is tracked by the Development of Alumni Relations.

Legacy Early Move-In Suspended

One of the benefits normally extended to legacy students is early fall move-in for incoming first-year students choosing to live on campus. However, to comply with our comprehensive health and safety protocols, the University will not be able to offer early move-in to first-year students this year.

Questions regarding housing assignments, roommates, what to bring, or any general housing questions may be directed to the Department of Housing and Residential Life at 305-284-4505. Visit the Department of Housing and Residential life webpage for more information.

Legacy Welcome Reception

Incoming legacy families are invited to a special annual reception hosted by the Office of Family Relations as an official welcome to campus. It is an honor and great pleasure to congratulate and welcome our newest legacy families to the U!

Family Weekend

Traditionally, this weekend provides families the opportunity to visit campus and take part in the numerous activities and events, including a University of Miami Hurricanes football game, that are planned for their enjoyment.

Alumni Weekend & Homecoming Campus Walking Tours

Join us for special alumni campus walking tours during Alumni Weekend & Homecoming and see how the campus has changed and evolved since your time at the U.

Graduating Legacy Reception

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations celebrates graduating students and their families at our annual Graduating Legacy Reception. At this special ceremony, alumni legacy parents or grandparents will have the opportunity to present their graduating student with an official University of Miami legacy stole to wear during commencement.

University of Miami Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship Program

Each year, the University of Miami Alumni Association works with the Office of Admission and Office of Financial Aid to select a freshman recipient for a modest renewable legacy scholarship. Eligibility for the legacy scholarship is automatic for any legacy student who applies for admission and qualifies for financial aid.

To be considered, one need only complete their undergraduate application for admission to the University of Miami and identify the name of their alumni parent/grandparent on the Common Application. The student must also submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) through the federal processor, with the University (school code 001536) listed as a recipient of the results. Recipients are notified over the summer of their selection by a representative of the Alumni Association.
