Henry Butler

Henry N. Butler, J.D. ’82
Dean and Professor of Law, Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University

Dean Henry Butler grew up the son of a proud Virginia family during the time of racial segregation. Dean Butler watched with admiration as his father was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1972; two years later, he was inspired by his father’s courage as one of seven Republicans who voted to impeach President Nixon.

Weaving together life experiences and tales of his mentors and political heroes, Dean Butler will focus on the important role of civil discourse in capturing the benefits of free speech and fostering a competitive marketplace of ideas. He will also describe the pivotal role of the University of Miami School of Law in launching his academic career, which has spanned 38 years with appointments at Texas A&M University, the University of Chicago, George Mason University, the University of Kansas, Chapman University, and Northwestern University.
