The University of Miami continues its rise to prominence among academic research institutions around the world largely due to the support and contributions of our alumni. As admission to UM becomes increasingly more selective, it is important that we pay special attention to our relationship with alumni and take exceptional care in evaluating legacy applications.

Legacy Early Move In

One of the perks of being a legacy is early fall move in for freshmen living on campus!

Incoming legacy students that choose to live on campus had the opportunity to move in early on Monday, August 13, regardless of their assigned time.

This benefit allowed students and their families to move in calmly and beat the rush!

Questions regarding housing assignments, roommates, what to bring, or any general housing questions may be directed to the Department of Housing and Residential Life at 305-284-4505.

Visit the Department of Housing and Residential life webpage for more information.

Legacy Welcome Reception

Incoming legacy families were invited to a special reception hosted by the UM Alumni Association as an official welcome to campus on Monday, August 13, 2018. The event included the opportunity to meet other incoming legacy families, hear from UM administrators and meet UM Alumni Association staff. Guests enjoyed refreshments and carnival-style food and games as we congratulated the 2018 legacy scholarship recipient.

Graduating legacies, please join us for the Graduating Legacy Reception on May 8, 2019, from 6:00-7:00 p.m., at the Newman Alumni Center. The UM Alumni Association officially welcomes graduating students to the family during this special ceremony where the legacy parent/grandparent will have the opportunity to present their graduating legacy with an official UM legacy stole to wear during commencement. Alumni parents and grandparents are invited to join us for the special ceremony celebrating alumni families.

Each year, the UM Alumni Association works with the Office of Admission and Office of Financial Aid to select a freshman recipient of a $5,000 renewable, legacy scholarship. Eligibility for the Legacy Scholarship is automatic for any legacy student who applies for admission and qualifies for financial aid.

To be considered, one need only complete their undergraduate application for admission to the University of Miami and identify the name of their alumni parent/grandparent on the Common Application. The student must also submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid through the federal processor, with the University (school code 001536) listed as a recipient of the results.

Recipients are notified over the summer of their selection by a representative of the Office of Alumni Relations.
