Building the UM community through mentoring

Cane2Cane puts the strength of the ’Canes network at students’ fingertips

By Eliane Rodriguez

When you combine the knowledge and skill of 'Canes alumni with their extensive global reach, you get an influential professional network that has the strength to help future ’Canes succeed in any industry. With that in mind, the Toppel Career Center, in partnership with the Office of Engagement, is launching the University of Miami’s mentor network, Cane2Cane.

The new platform will connect students with alumni, parents, and ’Cane employers for career advice and guidance. It’s open to all schools, colleges, and industries and will allow students to explore career paths, prepare for the workplace, and expand their professional network.

Carly Smith, Associate Director of Career Education at Toppel Career Center, says mentors can decide how they want to be involved in Cane2Cane – whether that’s by sharing industry trends, discussing work/life balance, helping with resume or interview prep, or more. “You choose how much you would like to help and how many emails you receive,” she says, "and you can adjust your settings at any time.”

Sarah Seavey, Director of Alumni Career Services, is excited for alumni to participate in the new program, which provides alumni with often-requested mentoring opportunities. “Cane2Cane will showcase the strength of the ’Canes network in a way we haven’t been able to do in the past,” she says. “It provides alumni with the opportunity to leverage their expertise and passion in a unique way by giving and connecting back to the heart of U: our students and future members of our alumni family.”

Cane2Cane will be shared with students in late August, at which time they will be able to search for areas of interest and identify mentors in the community. In the meantime, potential mentors can easily create their Cane2Cane profile and share their interests, industry expertise, experiences, and more in preparation for the student launch this fall.

“You do not have to be on campus to leave a footprint at the University of Miami,” Seavey says. “Whether you are local or across the globe, we invite alumni and parents from around the world to be a part of Cane2Cane.”
