A legacy of excellence

Since our founding, the U has become one of the most competitive academic research institutions in the country—just last year, we received more than 50,000 applications for a freshman class of approximately 2,100 first-year students. Our success is due in great part to our more than 198,000 alumni whose accomplishments speak volumes about the value of a University of Miami degree.

Prospective Students

The U’s Legacy Program recognizes the commitment of these alumni, who support and encourage their children or grandchildren to consider the U for college. If you’re a legacy applicant who wants to further your Hurricane heritage, we encourage you to submit your information to ensure your legacy relationship is tracked by our Division of Development and Alumni Relations.

Legacy Move-In

A bonus of being a first-year legacy student living on campus is priority fall move-in which allows you to beat the rush! Please note, a specific time frame will be assigned which must be adhered to in order for you and all legacy families to enjoy the best, most efficient experience.

All housing related questions may be answered online at Department of Housing & Residential Life.

Legacy Welcome Celebration

Incoming legacy families are invited to a special annual reception hosted by the Office of Family Relations as an official welcome to campus. It is an honor and great pleasure to congratulate and welcome our newest legacy families to the U!

Family Weekend

Traditionally, this weekend provides families the opportunity to visit campus and take part in the numerous activities and events, including a University of Miami Hurricanes football game, that are planned for their enjoyment.

Graduating Legacy Reception

The Division of Alumni Relations celebrates graduating students and their families at our annual Graduating Legacy Reception each May. At this special ceremony, legacy parent(s)/grandparent(s) will have the opportunity to present their graduating legacy with an official UM legacy stole to wear during commencement.

Please RSVP to the May 9th event here.

University of Miami Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship Program

Each year, the University of Miami Alumni Association works with the Office of Admission and Office of Financial Aid to select a freshman recipient for a modest renewable legacy scholarship. Eligibility for the legacy scholarship is automatic for any legacy student who applies for admission and qualifies for financial aid.

If you're interested in this scholarship, you need to complete your undergraduate application for admission to the University of Miami and identify the name of your alumni parent/grandparent on the Common Application. You must also submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) through the federal processor, with the University (school code 001536) listed as a recipient of the results. Recipients are notified over the summer of their selection by a representative of the Alumni Association.
