The UM Alumni App is a digital tool that brings together all of the benefits that the lifetime membership to the UM Alumni Association offers. Engage with fellow alumni in your ’Canes Community, receive updates and information on events and more!

Detailed steps to download the app.

  1. Go to your phone’s app store, and use these direct links or search “UM Alumni” to download:


2. Download the app.

3. Allow notifications and location services. Why? This way you won’t miss in-app exclusives and alumni events near you!

4. Click "Log in" and enter your first name and last name. Enter your university C Number. Don’t know your C Number? Check your inbox and look for an email from the UM Alumni Association with the subject line "Get the New UM Alumni App".

Quick Tip: Be sure to stay logged in to the app so you always have your digital alumni card at the ready, and you won’t miss in-app exclusives and alumni events near you. You’ll find out about all the 'Canes Community happenings before your #CaneForLife friends!

Update Your Contact Information:  

Make sure your contact information is up to date! You can choose whether or not you would like to be searchable in the directory; there is a check box at the end of the form. If you add or update your contact information here, it will be securely entered in the main university database and not sold to third parties. Read details about our privacy policy and data security.

Digital Alumni Card:

The digital alumni card can be used at participating 'Cane Biz shops and on campus for special alumni discounts. If you graduated after 2006 and live in Miami-Dade County, you can also use it at UM Parking and Transportation to obtain an official 'Cane ID Card for use on campus. Otherwise, contact our office for more information.

The digital alumni card is a substitute for the printed alumni card that is mailed out upon graduation. 

Alumni Directory:

The alumni directory is only available to alumni after logging into the app. The directory will enable alumni to connect with one another via email. The directory is searchable, so you can find friends by name, school or graduation year. Please note, you may opt-out of the directory at any time.

'Canes Communities and Affinity Groups:  

Network with fellow 'Canes and join events in your area! Each community is led by volunteer leaders, and the app will provide a digital space for a calendar of events and opportunities to connect and stay involved.  



Receive notifications about the UM Alumni Association, in-app perks, contests, and events happening in your area. The option to receive notifications is enabled when you download the app, so be sure to allow notifications and location services so you don’t miss out! 


What is a C number?

Your C number (C#) is a unique identification number assigned to everyone, including alumni, affiliated with the University of Miami. The I.D. begins with a C and is followed by eight digits. If your C# is less then eight digits, add zeroes after the C to make it a total of nine characters; for example, C123456 should be C00123456. The C# is the primary record keeping key for the UM Alumni Association and is used for all communication. C numbers are part of database directory information and can only be used to confirm your identity at the University of Miami. 

How do I log in?

Click "Log in". Then use your first name, last name and C#. If you are having trouble logging in, and you know your C#, try entering your name exactly as it was when you graduated. Still having trouble? Email or call (305) 284-2872. Be sure to include your first and last name, the year you graduated/attended and, your school or college.

How do I update my profile?

1. Click on the "Update Info" tile.

2. Update your information in the form.

3. You can update as much or as little as you'd like.

4. Click save.

5. Information will automatically be updated in the directory and the UM alumni database.

How do I remove my information from the directory?

1. Click on the "Update Info" tile.

2. Scroll to the bottom of the form.

3. Click the check box under "Directory Settings" that says "Please opt me out of the directory"

4. Click "Submit Changes".

5. Information will automatically be removed from the directory. 

Does the alumni card replace the 'Cane Card?

No, the alumni card is not a substitute for the 'Cane Card, which is the official on-campus identification and access card for anyone on campus.

Where can I use my alumni card?

You can use the digital alumni card at the UM Parking and Transportation office to obtain a 'Cane ID Card or parking permit. The digital card can also be used for discounts around campus, at participating 'Cane Biz stores and for check-in purposes at 'Canes Community, Affinity Group and UM Alumni Association events.

My app is frozen or not loading, what do I do?

1. Click on the menu icon  menu icon or swipe right to see the sidebar.

2. At the bottom left hand corner, click the circular arrows refresh icon. This will refresh the app.

How do I join a 'Canes Community or Affinity Group?

All alumni who log in to the app will be placed into their designated 'Canes Community. If you would like to join another 'Canes Community, or your community is not correct, please follow the instructions below. 

1. Click on the 'Canes Community or Affinities tile.

2. Allow the page to fully load.

3. Scroll down or use the search box to find a community by city or affinity group by name.

4. Click on the image.

5. Once the page loads, you can join a community or group by clicking the join button Join Button

6. Once you join you will see events, message boards, and directory and social streams for that city or group. 

*Please note that some groups are private and require approval by the group administrator.

Why should alumni download and use the app?

The UM Alumni App provides easy access to information about UM services and communications, a calendar of events, links to local 'Canes Communities and many more engagement opportunities. Be sure to allow notifications and location services when you download the app, and you’ll receive updates on nearby alumni events and UM happenings.

How do I know if I am seeing all the tiles?

iPhone users just need to click the bottom right “more” tile to see all their personalized content. Android users just need to keep scrolling to see all their tiles.


How do I know my information is secure?

The University of Miami Alumni Association has partnered with a vendor named MobileUp to implement this exciting new tool. MobileUp uses the Microsoft Azure platform. Using Azure means Microsoft ensures that our administrative tools, infrastructure and backend storage are always up-to-date and utilizing industry standard security protocols. All security scanning and software patching is handled by Microsoft.

Microsoft has invested heavily to become the cloud solution with the most compliance certifications, including SSO, ISO, CSA, PCI, and FERPA. For a full list, visit:
