University of Miami Black Alumni Society

The mission of the University of Miami Black Alumni Society is to facilitate a comprehensive network among University alumni, students, faculty, staff, family, and friends to advance the interests and needs of our community and promotes the rich history of Black alumni at the University.

Who We Are

The University of Miami Black Alumni Society (UMBAS) is an official affiliate group of the University of Miami Alumni Association that is committed to enhancing the University experience for African American, African, Black non-African-descent, Black Caribbean and Black Latin University of Miami alumni and students.

The University of Miami Black Alumni Society was established in 1989 by a group of dedicated alumni who identified a need to continue nurturing the success of the Black community within and beyond the University. Several educational forums, a viable professional network, the advancement of student and alumni interests, and scholarship funding can be attributed to the efforts of the UMBAS.

Society Initiatives

Today more than ever, University of Miami students of all backgrounds rely on those who have gone before them to help make their academic aspirations come true. At over $55,000 annually, the cost of attending one of the country’s finest universities can be daunting. Eighty percent of the University’s students receive some financial aid, with 43 percent on either need-based or merit scholarships. Even so, many talented Black students are forced to drop out of college in their junior or senior years because they are unable to afford tuition and fees.

The Black Alumni Society Scholarship is funded each year by contributions from alumni and friends, and awarded to eligible student applicants. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, the Black Alumni Society has been able to offer this scholarship for more than 20 years.

The University of Miami is committed to ensuring access to the highest quality education and to attract the most talented students by expanding undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Contributions to these scholarships offer need-based financial support and recognize the academic accomplishments of underrepresented students and students of color enrolled at the U.

Haiti Initiatives

The University of Miami Black Alumni Society is strengthening the U’s efforts to assist our brothers and sisters in Haiti. The executive leadership of UMBAS is committed to supporting the Black diaspora locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, and calls on members to demonstrate their support by giving to one of these funds providing life-sustaining aid to the resilient island nation.

The University is putting its expertise and innovation to work in response to the catastrophic earthquake of August 14. In partnership with Haiti’s Ministry of Health, our Global Institute for Community Health and Development, led by the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine with the participation of other schools and colleges, is engaged in a coordinated response among more than 30 health and disaster relief organizations on the ground in Haiti.

The UMBAS leaders thank you for your contributions! They will support immediate and long-term medical and humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti.
