University of Miami Black Alumni Society

The mission of the University of Miami Black Alumni Society is to facilitate a comprehensive network among University alumni, students, faculty, staff, family, and friends to advance the interests and needs of our community and promotes the rich history of Black alumni at the University.

Who We Are

The University of Miami Black Alumni Society (UMBAS) is an official affiliate group of the University of Miami Alumni Association that is committed to enhancing the University experience for African American, African, Black non-African-descent, Black Caribbean and Black Latin University of Miami alumni and students.

The University of Miami Black Alumni Society was established in 1989 by a group of dedicated alumni who identified a need to continue nurturing the success of the Black community within and beyond the University. Several educational forums, a viable professional network, the advancement of student and alumni interests, and scholarship funding can be attributed to the efforts of the UMBAS.

Society Initiatives

At the U, we strive to offer an inclusive experience for African American, African, Black non-African-descent, Black Caribbean and Black Latin University of Miami alumni, families, students and friends, through fostering purposeful engagement, providing financial support for programs, scholarships, and other general needs while building and sustaining a responsive network of mentors to support the growing needs of the community.

The University of Miami is committed to ensuring access to the highest quality education and to attract the most talented students by expanding undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Contributions to these scholarships offer need-based financial support and recognize the academic accomplishments of underrepresented students and students of color enrolled at the U.

Johnny Taylor Family UTrailblazers Experience

The Johnny Taylor Family UTrailblazers Experience, made possible by a significant gift from Johnny C. Taylor, alumnus, and member of the University of Miami Board of Trustees, will pay tribute to those Black alumni and students, living and deceased, who attended the University during the 1960s and 1970s—as well as spotlight the contributions of present and future Black students.
