Mission

The mission of the University of Miami Veteran ‘Canes Society is to support and advance the interests and needs of our veteran and military community, to help our veterans and military service members thrive and have access to a first-class education and resources to exceed. Also, to facilitate a comprehensive network for university veterans and military alumni, students, faculty, staff, family, and friends to ensure a culture of belonging and ensure they stay connected to the U.

Who We Are

The Veteran ‘Canes Society is an official affiliate group of the University of Miami Alumni Association that is committed to enhancing the University experience for all veteran and military-connected alumni, families, students, faculty, and staff.

History

Veterans have long played a significant role in shaping the University of Miami. With only 1,923 students in 1945, the University more than tripled its enrollment to 6,902 the following year as returning servicemen filled classrooms. Since then, the University has continued to welcome and support veterans through a number of programs and resources that has earned the U the #25 ranking on the US News & World Report 2021 Best Colleges for Veterans list. The University participates in federal initiatives helping veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees, such as the GI Bill, and in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which makes additional funds available to veteran students.

In addition to scholarships, a number of on-campus resources are available to help with benefits and the transition to civilian life, including Veterans' Affairs Certifying Officials, UM Counseling Center specific programs for veteran students, the Veteran Employee Resource Group, and career planning and tutoring for vets. The Veteran Students Organization and the Veterans Resource Center provide support and an extensive network for veterans as they adapt to student life.

Our U alumni veterans reflect the diversity of our campus as a whole. They come from all walks of life and, though their experiences in the military differ, they all share a commitment to serving their country and to making an impact both during and after their time in the military. We honor and thank all our veterans for their service.

• Why should I join?

  In addition to existing alumni benefits and services, members will be kept informed of opportunities to connect and engage with fellow Veteran ’Canes and allies and assist with initiatives designed to enhance the experience of Veteran ’Canes at the U!

• Is there a cost?

  No, members are encouraged to further the University's mission through annual giving, but donations are not required and your affiliation with the Veteran ’Canes Society is lifelong!

Ways to Get Involved

• Engage former, current, and future University of Miami Veteran students through effective communication, programs, and events. Share your story, as a veteran or Military Cane.
• Mentor current veteran students or alumni
• Volunteer, support or plan a fundraising campaign for a Veterans Scholarship Fund and other philanthropic initiatives.
• Host or sponsor a program or event at your business
• Celebrate and promote the rich history of University of Miami Veteran alumni by building upon meaningful traditions and dynamic accomplishments.
• Serve as a member of our executive leadership board
