Many ’Canes have found lasting love at the University of Miami—here are some of their stories.

Marchettis

Ice skating to love

Daniella Marchetti, M.S.E.D. '15, M.S. '18, & Matteo Marchetti, A.B. '13, J.D. '16, L.L.M.I.A. '19

“Matteo and I met during a social event thrown by the Catholic Student Association at a local ice skating rink in 2010. Although I denied his offer for hot chocolate that night, we soon became inseparable. Our love has even led to us become triple 'Canes, as we decided to pursue higher education here so we could stay in the same city. Our baby, Chiara, has now been to two of our graduations at the Watsco Center. We can't wait to see her UM graduation in 21 years (if she wants to attend, of course!). I did check her blood type and I'm pretty sure she bleeds orange and green.” – Daniella

Lewis's

When football meet politics

Jeremy Lewis, A.B. '12, & Rochelle Lewis, A.B. '10, M.P.A. '11

“We met on campus during Jeremy’s freshman year at UM. He was an offensive lineman for the football team and I was a junior majoring in political science. We just celebrated our third wedding anniversary and next month we will celebrate eleven years together! If it wasn’t for the U we would never have met and we wouldn’t have our amazing son Carter.” – Rochelle

The Orovitz

From the bookstore to a lifelong love story

Norma Orovitz, A.B. ‘75, & Michael Orovitz, B.B.A. ‘64

“Michael and I were introduced by two cousins, both UM students, with whom we'd gone to separate high schools, one in NYC and the other in Miami Beach. We arranged to meet at the old bookstore in the Merrick Building in the beginning of September 1961. I was standing in the breezeway by the bookstore door and waited and waited. There was a young man standing catty-corner from me and he made no move to cross the patio. Finally, I walked over to him...He didn't recognize me because I had cut my hair since my yearbook picture had been taken. We dated for two years, became engaged in May 1963, and were married on September 1, 1963. Michael graduated in 1964. I dropped out of school and returned ten years later after our youngest of three daughters began nursery school. Michael used his business degree during his forty-five year banking career and I used my English degree as a journalist and, later, as a development director. We've each used what we learned as professional volunteers in our retirement.” – Norma

The Delgados

A tailgate to love

Rebecca Delgado, B.S. ’13, & Aaron Delgado, B.S. ’12

"We met through Aaron's brother, Nicholas Delgado, B.S. '13, at a Hurricanes tailgate party. We were always together shortly after meeting. As commuter students, we could occasionally be spotted enjoying lunch at our special spot on The Green. In August of 2015, Aaron popped the question on The Green and we got married July 2016 at The Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables. Since then, we've adopted a pug named Huey and moved to Naples, FL." – Rebecca

The Vanderhoevens

From a housewarming party to a warm home

Marci Vanderhoeven, B.B.A. '10, & Andrew Vanderhoeven, B.S.B.A. '11

"It was fall of 2011. Andrew had just graduated and moved back home. I had graduated a year earlier and  gotten my first apartment with another University of Miami alumna and sorority sister. I invited friends over for a housewarming party, and a mutual friend from Miami asked to bring along Andrew. We hit it off and became fast friends. But it wasn't until Spring/Summer of 2012, after a weekend-long date that involved dinner, baseball, and Titanic, that we realized that we wanted to be more than friends. We got married in June 2016. Our first child (#babycane) is named after the late Sean Taylor, a University of Miami football player. We also just had another baby boy, named Mason, February 1, 2020. True 'Canes family love." – Marci

The Sargaduys

From soccer stars to married 'Canes

Borja Sagarduy, B.S.I.E. '14, & Jennifer Hicks Sagarduy, B.B.A. '16

“Jennifer and I found love at UM! She was a freshman double majoring in the business school and on the women’s club soccer team while I was a senior on the men’s club soccer team studying industrial engineering. We met during Nationals in Phoenix and have spent almost every day together since! Jennifer grew up in New Jersey as a Canes fan after both of her parents attended the U. I grew up across the street from Miami attending games in the Orange Bowl during most of my childhood. Jennifer and I are now married. Our wedding planner was also a fellow ‘Cane, Jeri-Anne Grace! We are ‘Canes fam all the way.” – Borja

Claudia Margolis and Tony Milian

No loft, just love

Claudia Margolis, B.A. '02, & Antonino (Tony) Milian, B.S.I.E. '02, M.S.I.E. '02

Even before Tony and I met, his sister Amy and I had exchanged pictures since we were going to be roommates. She sent a picture of her brother who built lofts, in case I wanted to purchase one. I was more interested in the brother than the loft!

When I arrived on campus, my new roommate and her family were instantly welcoming. Everyone was very nice and thoughtful. Tony even helped set up some of my shelving. Although we hung out casually a few times, it wasn’t until the summer of my sophomore year that we got to know each other better. I distinctly remember driving home from an adventure in the Florida Keys, which is where I was from, thinking to myself that I really liked this guy! From then on we were inseparable. Tony came with me to Kappa Kappa Gamma formals, and I hung out with him while he fished in the lake on campus for Jacks.

We got married at Grove Isle in 2003, one year after we graduated from the U. We now have 3 beautiful children. We love traveling and we still enjoy fishing." - Claudia
